John Reil Casimero to leave early for Nicaragua for WBO Interim Title bout


Team Casimero will be leaving ten days before the scheduled December 19 WBO interim lt.flyweight title fight involving John Reil Casimero of Leyte versus Cesar Canchila of Colombia in Managua, Nicaragua This will help in Casimero’s acclimatization for his first fight outside the Philippines. Promoter Sammy Gello-ani said that he has already received a message saying that their visas have been approved. Casimero will continue his training in Managua together with trainers Christopher “Pingping” Tepora and Nonito Donaire,Sr.

The 20 year old Casimero is from Ormoc, Leyte and is currently residing inside the IPI Gym at Baranggay Guizo, Mandaue City, Cebu. He fights right handed and is undefeated in 13 fights with 7 KO’s.

Casimero has been training since July and has sparred around 300 rounds. He has not yet reached the 12 round distance in his pro career but has reached it three times during training.

Cesar Canchila is no pushover having won the WBA interim world crown and has a record of 28W-2L, 22KO’s. Their match-up which will be part of a special major boxing event in Nicaragua in MEMORY OF ALEXIS "EL FLACO EXPLOSIVO" ARGUELLO. This event was the late Arguello's wish when he requested the President of Nicaragua to have a big boxing event in the country. International matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz stressed the importance of bringing in new talent during the press conference held in Nicaragua thus he decided to bring in Casimero.

Casimero won the vacant Philippines Boxing Federation (PBF) Flyweight Title August 2008 with a ten round unanimous decision over Rodel Quilaton in Alcoy, Cebu. He then won the WBO Asia Pacific light flyweight title October 2008 with a 5th round TKO over Liempetch Sor Veerapol of Thailand in Talisay City His last fight was in May 2009 at the Cebu Coliseum and scored an 8th round TKO win over Ardin Diale to successfully defend his WBO Asia-Pacific title.

During a conversation he had with this writer Wednesday evening, Casimero expressed confidence that he can handle Canchila as he has seen a couple of his fights already.

The reigning WBO world lt. flyweight champion is Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico. Winning this interim world title will put Casimero closer to a shot at Calderon or will elevate him to champion status if the title is vacated.

Nicaragua lawmakers resist president's re-election

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — President Daniel Ortega's attempt to run for re-election has run into a setback in congress.

Lawmakers are refusing to recognize a Supreme Court decision that would allow Ortega to run again in 2011 by overturning bans on consecutive re-election and serving more than two terms.

The National Assembly approved a resolution Thursday to oppose the top court's decision. Legislators say it is up to Nicaragua's electoral commission to choose which branch of government to heed.

The electoral commission's president says the Supreme Court's ruling is final. But he leaves the post in 2010 and lawmakers are betting his replacement will side with them.

Nicaragua criticizes Honduran congress for not reinstating Zelaya

MANAGUA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Manuel Coronel Thursday rebuked the Honduran National Congress for not reinstating ousted President Manuel Zelaya.

At a press conference, Coronel said Honduras must find a solution to the current political crisis in accordance with the Constitution.

The majority of Honduran lawmakers Wednesday voted against Zelaya's reinstitution. Zelaya was deposed by a military coup on June 28.

Coronel also criticized U.S. performances in the Honduran standoff as "shameless," saying it has attempted to divide the Latin American people on the issue.

Nicaragua has not recognized the results of Honduras' presidential election on Nov. 29, in which opposition candidate Porfirio Lobo was declared the winner.

Nicaragua, IDB sign agreement to improve fiscal and social management

MANAGUA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Nicaraguan government and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) signed an agreement Thursday to finance the improvement of fiscal management and the reform of social expenses, the IDB said.

The agreement, totaling 40.5 million U.S. dollars, aims to support a program of reforms to improve social and fiscal management by increasing the efficiency and transparency of tax collection and the expenses incurred by sustained economic growth and poverty reduction, said IDB Assistant Representative Rafaela Varela.

Varela added that it is the sixth operation out of seven to aid Nicaragua in 2009.

According to the IDB, it has given 162 million dollars this year to Nicaragua for development programs, and it expects to gives ome 170 million dollars in 2010.

In 2008, the IDB contributed some 20 million dollars to the first step of social and fiscal management improvement, and it will appropriate the third amount of 40 million dollars to this program in 2010.

Meanwhile, Nicaragua's Treasury Minister Alberto Guevara said that the agreement between the Nicaraguan government and the IDB will be submitted to the National Assembly in the coming hours to be approved as an urgent issue.

CUBAN-NICARAGUAN DISABILITY STUDY CONTINUES

MANAGUA, Dec 3 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) – The Cuban-Nicaragua brigade “Todo con Voz” continue their disability study in the Chinandega province as part of government efforts to aid one of the most marginalised sectors.

Local authorities led by Chinandega Mayor Enrique Saravia and Heath Director Luis Ramon Lindo, received on Tues Dec 1 the medical brigade.

After finishing their work in Masaya and Mataglapa provinces, the brigade made up of 68 Cuban doctor and specialists will work in Chinandega for a month.

The study carried out by the multi-disciplinary group has as objective to find out the main causes of disability in Nicaraguan municipalities.

Doctors finished their work last week in Matagalpa, where they saw 8,250 local people, 300 of them with severe disabilities that need to be assisted quickly by specialists, according to statistics published by the brigade coordinator, Miladys Orraca.

Orraca pointed out that they assisted about 26,000 Nicaraguans in Masaya and Matagalpa, 8,000 of them with some kind of disability.

Cuban specialists began their work in Nicaragua in Oct to find out the main causes of Nicaraguan disabled people to help the government and the health system and plan assistance programmes for these people. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA

Nicaragua government supporters attack opponents

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Rock-throwing supporters of Nicaragua's governing Sandinista party have attacked a small protest march by the opposition.

The opposition rally Monday was marking the first anniversary of 2008 local elections that activists say were marred by fraud.

The protesters sought protection at a police station after being confronted by a few dozen masked people carrying red-and-black flags, the Sandinista colors. A hail of stones from the Sandinista backers broke several windows at the police station.

Some countries have suspended aid to Nicaragua's leftist government because of the electoral problems.
